FROM HIPSTERS TO HIPPIES BACK TO HIPSTERS

HIPPIES TO HIPSTERS
Protest of generations

Red Square protest

Youths of the past and youths of today, ever searching for that common goal and a sense of unity. Hippies  a subculture that was originally a youth movement that arose in the United States during the mid-1960’s. The word hippie originated from the word hipster. Hipster is a term that we are familiar with today; often use to describe a sense of fashion or lifestyle-. More importantly I will discuss the similarities of hippies and hipsters of today. Hippies started a youth movement in 1960’s and the hipsters in more recent memory made a big splash with the" red square movement”.
It’s important to not that youths of the 1960’s were hippies were actually a small portion of the population but they had a strong message and they were heard  estimated 100,000 moved to San Francisco. The youths of the 60’s main message was spreading a new idea of lifestyle spreading peace and love freedom. This defiantly was a culture shock for that time, accompanied with these messages was also a new fashion trend long hair, hippie style clothing, as well as sexual freedom and recreational drug use.  The Hippies were strongly against the US involvement in the Vietnam War, often protesting American involvement through non-violent political demonstrations like marches.
Red Square movement was a series of student protest in Quebec 2012. The young protesters main concern was the hike in tuition fees from $2,168 to $3,793 between 2012 and 2018. This partied with their thoughts on a need for political chance lead to a very public demonstration once again not all youths would be a part of these demonstration but at its height about 200-300 thousands students marched the streets together battling a common goal. This was followed by nightly "casserole" protests (in which people bang pots and pans), led by hipsters in the neighborhoods of Montréal.

Both movements from 1960 and 2012 are similar, even though starting in different era's and generations, their common ideals brought them together and with that  sense of unity that "we" factor is important mainly because the strength in numbers ,a sense of belonging and a common goal. From one generation to the next there are some youth that band together and start a movement, whether your message is peace and love or tuition fees.
