Teen Angst is Real

Every teenager goes through that period in their teenage years where they just need that angst. Whether it be lack of attention from your parents, to the fear of not being accepted by other kids in your school, or even wanting to be the exact opposite of everyone else. It doesn’t matter whether or not teen angst is an actual “illness”, it happens to every teen, deal with it.

Personally, I used to create problems, I would take the smallest thing and turn it into a big fight. One time my dad and I got into a fight about something ridiculous and said “If you’re not happy get out”. I took it to the literal sense and left, I then told my friend that my dad had kicked me out. When I look back at those years I laugh and tell myself that I could have had it so much harder. Around that same time, my version of teen angst was watching movies and pretending I had the same problems they had. I know, it seems pretty desperate, which is basically what I was back in grade 8.

The first movie I decided was very angsty and defined my life completely was SLC Punk! there are a couple things that I didn’t realize back then. First, I wasn't in any kind of way a punk, I didn't have divorced parents, and I was about 5 years younger than the main character. Also, I didn't have any friends around me that did any kind of drugs, which is one of films most important themes. The scene I basically lived by in this movie was when Stevo confronts his parents. I thought this was brilliant. this whole movie is about Stevo being angsty and rebelling against society as a whole, including his parents.I wanted my parents to know that I could be whoever I wanted and I didn't need their help to get me anywhere. I started trying out different styles from punk-rock to preppy. The problem with my parents is that they didn’t  care, they accepted every single style I had tried, which made me even more angry.

Then we’ve got a classic, The Breakfast Club. I loved that there was every typical teen character in this movie and they all had their own problems. I’m sure no one will be surprised when I say that, I tried to be every single one of them. Obviously some didn’t work out, and some did for a while. The scene with the most impact for me in this movie was the scene where they're all talking about why they do what they do. To me it was, and still is, a perfect example of the secret behind teen angst. These characters all seem to have explained perfectly why every teen is angsty at one point or another.

Basically, no matter if you have “real” problems or not, as a teen you're going to have a period a angsty times.Teenagers are angry, they all have a reason to be pissed off. The difference is that some teens go through teen angst very loudly, other keep to themselves.
